Welcome to the Fraser Coast
Sitting proudly between Bundaberg and the Sunshine Coast, the Fraser Coast is home to two World Heritage-listed destinations and the intriguing twin cities of Hervey Bay and Maryborough. A holiday here means a visit to the world’s largest sand island, K’gari (previously known as Fraser Island). With a name that means ‘paradise’, you’re sure to enjoy idyllic experiences throughout this incredible stretch of sand, including the crystal-clear Lake McKenzie. Get set for a Queensland holiday of beautiful natural encounters, days spent lazing on sun-soaked, pristine beaches, and spotting playful whales just offshore.
Named the world’s first whale heritage area, Hervey Bay on the Fraser Coast is the place of choice for humpback whales to frolic and play as they migrate south from July to November. Hop a tour out to the ocean or simply spot them breaching from the beach. The 14 kilometres of bay waters and those surrounding the Wide-Bay Burnett Region almost guarantee you a sighting.
K’gari is home to beautiful crystal-clear, freshwater lakes and creeks, long stretches of white sand beaches and an abundance of wildlife. Just a 40-minute boat ride from the mainland, there are guided or self-drive tours on the island and the 90 kilometre Great Walk through rainforest grown from sand. Set foot on the famous white silica sand and beautiful clear blue waters of Lake McKenzie known to locals as Boorangoora. Float down Eli Creek and visit the Maheno Shipwreck along 75 Mile Beach. See the unique Lake Wabby, wander the boardwalk around Wanggoolba Creek and be sure to take in the breathtaking magnitude of The Cathedrals sand cliffs. Hop into the Champagne Pools, a popular natural rock pool formation full of bubbles when the tide crashes over the rocks. With so much unique natural beauty, K’gari is a tough one to leave.
The birthplace of Mary Poppins, Maryborough offers cultural experiences and a rich military past. Time your visit for the Mary Poppins Festival, or wander the town for eclectic art throughout the CDB following The Mural Trail. Explore the Military and Colonial Museum and take the Anzac walk at Maryborough’s Gallipoli to Armistice Memorial in Queens Park.
Explore Lady Elliot Island, one of the seven natural wonders of the world this coral cay on the barrier reef has been rejuvenated thanks to the Lady Elliot Eco Resort efforts. Visit the picturesque seaside township of the Burrum Coast to relax along the coastline, throw in a line and enjoy the local seafood. Dive the ex-HMAS Tobruk just north of Hervey Bay and walk almost one kilometre on water down the Urangan Pier. With safe, secluded beaches, diving experiences, fishing, hinterland, arts and culture, the Fraser Coast is an incredible destination for your next Queensland holiday.
